Neulich Mittag beim Gruppentreffen fürs radio assignment mit meinen asiatischen work mates.
Qin: I don't understand these white people! They don't seem to care about uni assignments. They just don't care. It really stresses me out.
Kerry: What's the problem?
Q: My group for the media law assignment. We've got a presentation coming up next week. They're all Australian girls and they don't wanna meet up to prepare it this week. They didn't wanna do the readings. They said we could meet on Wednesday night.
K: When's the presentation?
Q: Thursday.
S: So?
Q: You can't just meet up the night before... What about all the preparation. I started the reading last week. And none of them have had a look at anything yet. Now, I have to everything...
S: Well, you don't have to...
Q: But they're not doing it. They're so laid back.
S: I think, they just work differently...
Q: Why are white people like that?
S: Well... I don't know. I mean. It's not that we don't care at all. We do. We just like doing other things as well. Not only just studying. Socialising is quite important as well, you know. At least for me. And I guess it's the same for the Australian students. I mean, I really envy you guys for being able to sit in the library for hours and hours, just studying. I couldn't do that. Never. And I guess it's the same for them. It's okay to sit in the library and read for two or three hours, but after that I really wanna do something else. Meet people, go to the movies, go to the pub for a beer...
Q: Really?
S: Yeah. Don't you?
Q: So, you're the same as them.
S: Well, I guess, I am just a normal white chick.
K: Haha, a laid-back white girl.
S: Yes, laid-back and lazy.
Q: But if you have assignments due?
S: Well, yeah. I still do my assignments and I hand them in on time. I just really wanna socialize in between studying. You have to relax somehow.
Q: I couldn't do that.
S: Yeah, I guess that's the difference.
Ten minutes later.
K: So, are we done?
S: Yeah, we've got the whole program planned, I've written everything down. We just really need to come up with a name.
K: Yes, so I'll see you guys for editing on Wednesday. Oh, and can you send us an email with the outline of the program.
S: Sure! But as I am a lazy white chick, it might take me a few days. Don't expect anything before the end of Monday. There will be too many other things to do all weekend... Going out for dinner, going to the beach...

guter Erklräungsversuch, aber lazy und laid back sind die beiden letzten Bezeichnungen die mir bei Dir eingefallen wären...
lol
i guess thats because the different value systems. also it depends on how people prioritise the tasks. i do think socialising is important! cant live w/out friends/movies/friends gathering. itd be driving me mad if i do studies only!! [well it happened in my 2nd sem of my 1st year, after partying too much in 1st sem :p].
i value differences, that makes the world more interesting and everyone stands out becasue of the difference. :)
Schön. Schöner interessanter Dialog über ein Thema, bei dem ich mich schon öfter gefragt habe, was Andersdenkende bzw. -handelnde wohl zu sagen hätten. Ich kenne so wenige Asiaten! ;)
Well said Kerry! It'd be too boring if everybody would be the same or at least similar!
